10.2 Climate Mitigation Technology

About 75% of the world's energy supply comes from burning non-renewable fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) (IPCC TP-1, 1996). The balance comes from nuclear or renewable energy. Since fossil fuels are expected to be a major source of energy for the near future, reducing GHG emissions in the energy supply sector in the relatively short term must come about primarily by reducing the emissions of GHGs during the production and transformation of fossil fuels. Some technologies with both near and longer term potential to economically reduce GHG emissions from fossil fuel production are listed below, along with comments on technology transfer.
