IPCC at the High Level Summit on Climate Change

Nearly 100 world leaders accepted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's invitation to participate in an historic Summit on Climate Change.  During the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the IPCC,  Mr R.K. Pachauri addressed the Summit.

Vigne des Nations - 5 June 2009, Geneva



 
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2009, the Republic and Canton of Geneva has honoured the IPCC by dedicating the 2008 vintage to the IPCC at the ceremony of the “Vigne des Nations” in Bernex, Switzerland. Speeches were made by the State Councillor in charge of the Territory, Mr Robert Cramer, and the Mayor of Bernex. The IPCC was represented by Mr Thomas Stocker, Co-Chair of Working Group I, and by the Secretary of the IPCC, Ms Renate Christ. The ceremony was held in the presence of the diplomatic corps and representatives of International Environmental Institutions based in Geneva, as well as of members of the Executive Committee of WMO.

 20th Anniversary of the IPCC - 31st August 2007, Geneva


On Sunday 31st August 2008, the IPCC held an official ceremony to celebrate its founding 20 years ago. The Anniversary was celebrated in a 19th century hydro-power station, the "Bâtiment des Forces Motrices" (BFM), on the River Rhone in Geneva.The official ceremony featured opening  speeches  by  the UN  Secretary General, Mr  Ban  Ki-moon;  the Swiss Federal Councillor, Mr Leuenberger and  the  Chairman  of  the IPCC, Mr R.K. Pachauri. The Heads of the IPCC parent organizations, Mr Michel Jarraud, Secretary General of WMO, and Mr Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP, as well as a representative of the Executive Secretary  of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Mr Roberto Acosta, also addressed the audience.

Of noteworthy interest, the celebration programme included :
• Short  presentations on the  highlights  of  the  IPCC  Assessments  by special guests who have played an important role for the  IPCC in the past 20 years, such as Mr John Houghton, Mr Bob Watson and Mr Ogunlade Davidson. This was followed by a Panel discussion moderated by Mr Ralf Begleiter.

• A presentation by  R.K. Pachauri, Chair of the IPCC.
• IPCC reports as seen by the Photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand, featuring a preview of his film “Home” on the State of the Earth, to be released worldwide and free of rights on 5 June 2009 for World Environment Day.

After closure of the programme, a reception dinner was offered by the Swiss Government.. The celebration ended with a party organized with the participation of a music band, the Potentials, formed with IPCC musicians.

IPCC 29th Plenary

The IPCC 29th Plenary followed the IPCC 20th  anniversary celebration, from 1st to 4th September 2008.  It signaled IPCC’s entry into its 5th Assessment phase with a new Bureau and new Co-chairs. which were elected which were elected during the Plenary. The IPCC Chairman was reelected by acclamation.

"for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater
knowledge about man-made climate change, and to
lay the foundations for the measures that are
needed to counteract such change".
