IPCC Workshop on Engaging Diverse Knowledge Systems and IPCC Workshop on Methods of Assessment

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is organizing two  co-located  three-day workshops in the first quarter of 2026:

  • a Workshop on Engaging Diverse Knowledge Systems and
  • a Workshop on Methods of Assessment.

This follows the Panel’s agreement to  a proposal made by the IPCC Chair with the support of a drafting group, during its 62nd Session held in Hangzhou, China (IPCC-LXII/Doc. 7, Rev.1).

The Workshops

The scope of the Workshop on Engaging Diverse Knowledge Systems is to consider what systems of knowledge the IPCC can engage with and assess within the framework of existing principles and procedures.

The scope of the Workshop on Methods of Assessment is to consider the means by which such knowledge systems can be assessed.

Both workshops will also consider the extent to which such means of synthesis and assessment may be conducted by the IPCC itself or by the knowledge holders and research communities who generate the literature on which the IPCC relies.

The workshops will look at diverse knowledge systems, including scientific, Indigenous Knowledge, local knowledge and practitioner knowledge, as well as new and extended methods of assessment, including artificial intelligence techniques, systematic review techniques, assessment methods for ex-post evaluation evidence.

Among many things, the workshops will consider how the different types of knowledge system might be applied to different types of knowledge system and identify precautionary measures or limitations that might be necessary to ensure adherence to IPCC’s principles and procedures for the preparation of reports. They will also consider effective and equitable engagement of Indigenous Knowledge holders, and build on experience built up in other fora as appropriate.

Both workshops will produce a set of recommendations for consideration by the IPCC — authors, Bureaus, Technical Support Units, Secretariat and the panel itself —, research communities who generate the literature on which the IPCC relies, as well as funding bodies.

Participation to the workshops

A call for nomination of participants to the workshops is currently ongoing.

The nomination period is from Wednesday 4 June to Wednesday 16 July 2025.
