Understanding climate change and enabling climate actions with a special focus on mountain systems of the Hindu Kush Himalayas

Ministry of Population and Environment (MoPE) and International Centre for Integrated Development (ICIMOD) will co-host the event. It will showcase the Government of Nepal’s climate smart development as well as its national and local adaptation plans. There will also be sessions devoted to the IPCC 2016-2022 plans, the production of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), and the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) findings, and how these are being operationalized in South Asia. The objectives of the event are: To raise awareness, especially among policy makers, about the outcomes of the AR5 and the Himalayan Monitoring and Assessment Programme (HIMAP) and to demonstrate how climate change effects and will affect the region. We will also highlight potential solutions to the challenges of climate change; To raise awareness, especially among policy makers and the scientific community from the region, about the AR6 cycle work plan, IPCC priorities of the IPCC, and the state of Nepal’s climate smart development. ICIMOD will also share its strategic priorities for combating climate change in the region; To enlist the participation of the local science and research community in climate research and encourage regional contributions to future assessments and climate change studies; To foster a better understanding among the news media about climate science, the IPCC’s role, and innovative solutions for climate change as it affects vulnerable mountain communities; and To present key findings of climate change studies and enable climate actions among students, civil society and business sector representatives.
