Winston Chow

Co-Chair, Working Group II

Winston Chow was elected Co-Chair of Working Group II in July 2023. He is Professor of Urban Climate and a Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow at Singapore Management University’s College of Integrative Studies. He was a Lead Author in the WGII chapter on “Cities, Settlements and Key Infrastructure” and Lead for the Cross-Chapter Paper on “Cities and Settlements by the Sea” in AR6, as well as contributing to chapters in Working Groups I and III that had urban assessments. Dr. Chow was also a member of the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data) in AR6.

His main research interests are on urban climate change risk and vulnerability, and on urban climatology with a focus on heat island adaptation and mitigation. He is a Co-Lead Principal Investigator for the Cooling Singapore initiative, which is a major multi-​disciplinary and multi-institute research project dedicated to developing solutions to address Singapore’s urban heat challenge since 2017. Dr. Chow advises on several Singaporean and international urban resilience research projects, and also teaches courses on climate change and urban sustainability solutions at Singapore Management University. He has a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University, and holds Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Geography from the National University of Singapore.
