David Dokken

Head of TSU-Working Group III

David Dokken is Head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III Technical Support Unit (WGIII TSU) for the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report cycle.

As TSU Head, Dave directs activities related to planning, execution, evaluation, and communication of climate change assessments under the purview of Working Group III. He provides technical and operational direction to WGIII TSU staff and manages all governance and procedural aspects associated with WGIII deliverables. He works closely with the WGIII Co-Chairs and WGIII Bureau and serves in an advisory capacity on the IPCC Executive Committee. To ensure integration across working groups, he supports various task groups and action teams and scientific steering committees and serves as primary WGIII liaison with the IPCC Secretariat. To enhance efficiency and inclusiveness, he designed and helped establish a TSU structure that operates across multiple institutions around the globe.

Dave has extensive assessment experience. To date, he has co-edited four IPCC assessments (WGII contributions to the Second, Third, and Fifth Assessment Reports, and the Synthesis Report for the Third Assessment), four Special Reports, and two Technical Papers – assuming increasing responsibilities over time.

Most recently for the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), he coordinated the climate science chapters of the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5), oversaw development of the 2022-2031 USGCRP Strategic Plan, and served as managing editor of the Climate Science Special Report (NCA4 volume I). As International Assessment Science Lead, he devised mechanisms to ensure participation of the nation’s leading scientific experts in international assessment activities and provided support to the U.S. Department of State. Previously, he served as Deputy Director of USGCRP.

Dave obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and a Master’s in Professional Writing and Editing from George Mason University.
